Strathbogie

"OK, young Fergus", Young Mulde addressed the young soldier, "four months ago, I asked you how you would deal with Viking ships coming up a river. You have had four months to think about that, and I am told you have been doing some exercises down the river here to that end."

"Yes, sir, we have, but we have not considered a force the size which is now at Avochie."

"No, I guess none of us did, but they are here; what are your thoughts."

"It is indeed a huge force, but I think we could deal them a heavy blow if we work quickly."

"Continue", prompted Mulde.

There is an excellent position on the river at Marnoch, about five miles downstream, to set up an ambush. I expect the main force to go back downstream very soon and leave only a small contingent here to hold the garrison at Avochie. If we can ambush and wipe out a large proportion of the main force, then we can deal with the smaller force later."

"How many men would you need?"

"Two hundred men minimum, sir."

"That would only leave about three hundred men here against a garrison which may have a thousand men. No, that would be impossible. I think it is a good idea, but we can only spare fifty men."

"It would be a suicide mission, sir, with only fifty men, and we would be able to inflict very little damage to them before they overcome us."

"We have no more men to spare for this. Take fifty men with you, set it up. As soon as the main force leaves, we will attack the garrison here with the remaining forces we have."

"Yes, sir, as you wish", replied Fergus, fearful for the men under his command.

Fergus made his way east, skirting the Vikings' area, being very careful to look out for any scouts they may have out. Then, arriving at Marnoch, they set about immediately to build their defences and plan the ambush.
